If you have just experienced a flooding in your commercial building due to a torrential rainstorm or other natural disaster, you should immediately evacuate your building and call professional help.
If you are not certified or not experienced in assessing a damaged property, you should not go in. If you do, you can risk some of the following hazards:
- Structural collapse
- Structural collapse of the septic system
- Tripping and falling injuries
- Electrical shock hazards
- Fire and explosion hazards
- Loose or broken pipes which lead to gas leaks
- Toxic, sludge, or other waterborne bacteria
- Toxic mold growth
However, if you feel confident there is not much damage, here are some tips on dealing with a flooding in your building.
Stop Water Entry
If your building’s flooded, you will not be able to do much without professional help. However, if it is safe to do so, you can shut off your water, try to direct the runoff, and install durable tarps and boards to prevent further flooding.
Get Rid of Excess Water
The best thing you can do for this is to call your local Fire Department or other agencies that have machines that will pump the water out.
Salvage Furniture and Other Items
If there is any furniture or other items you can save, you can try to do so at this time. Again, it is not advised to do this without professional assistance. If you move things around, you can risk upsetting the structure and end up hurting yourself. If you get clearance to move things, store everything you can salvage in an area outside or in a garage. Do not bring anything to the higher floors because if those have not been damaged, you can risk contaminating the area with toxins from your items.
Overall, if you are experiencing a flood in your commercial building, you will want to call your fire department or storm relief departments for advice on how you should proceed.
